The ASU-57 was an important element of Soviet airborne forces’ armament in the 1950s and 1960s. It was the first tracked vehicle that could be dropped by parachute along with the landing troops. The original was equipped with a lightweight 57 mm Ch-51/Ch-51M cannon, the effectiveness and mobility of which were crucial during operations deep in enemy territory. The vehicle was used, among others, in Warsaw Pact countries, but also by USSR allies in the Middle East.
