The IS-1 was an experimental single-seat fighter aircraft designed in the Soviet Union by the N.N. Polikarpov design bureau. The IS-1 was characterized by a revolutionary approach to wing mechanization and, as the first Soviet design, was equipped with automatically folding wings. Although it was never put into serial production, its tests and technical solutions provided valuable experience for later Soviet combat aircraft.

The IS-1 flew only in the Soviet Union (USSR) and was used exclusively for research and construction testing in the pre-WW2 period (1938-1939). Although this unique prototype never saw combat, it is recorded in history as an innovative experiment in Soviet technical thought.
