Historical Information:

The Nakijama B5N1 Type 97 "Kate" is a Japanese carrier-based torpedo bomber, serving as the main armament of Japan’s naval aviation in the early years of World War II. It debuted in 1937 and was used in combat operations in the Pacific, including during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Thanks to its versatility—capable of carrying both torpedoes and bombs—it posed a significant threat to Allied ships. Unlike older bomber types, the B5N1 offered better performance and greater range.

The aircraft was operated by Japan until the end of the war, although from the middle of the conflict, it began to be replaced by newer versions and types. The B5N1 model was used on aircraft carriers such as Akagi and Kaga in the most famous naval operations of the 1937–1945 period.

Difficulty Level and Recommendations:

  • Assembly difficulty: 4/5 – recommended for intermediate and advanced modelers
  • Ideal for World War II dioramas for collectors
  • Excellent as a standalone display or part of a larger project

We recommend the Hasegawa JT78 Nakijama B5N1 Type 97 Kate model to all modelers who appreciate precise craftsmanship, detail, and historical authenticity. The wealth of details and realistic reproduction make this a unique and satisfying project for every military aviation enthusiast!

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
