The Focke-Achgelis Fa 223 Drache was the world’s first serially-produced transport helicopter, designed between 1938–1940 by German engineers Henrich Focke and Gerd Achgelis. Its maiden flight took place in 1940, with active service during World War II. Only about 15–20 units were produced in total, mainly due to bombing raids on factories and the complexity of its construction technology. The Fa 223 served a variety of roles: transporting cargo and personnel, evacuating wounded from inaccessible mountainous terrain in France and Yugoslavia, conducting rescue missions, and performing reconnaissance.
