USS Alaska (CB-1) was the first Alaska-class heavy cruiser. Its overall length was 246.43 m, displacement 34,253 tons, and a propulsion system of 150,000 hp allowed it to reach speeds of up to 32 knots and a range of 12,000 nautical miles at 15 knots. Commissioned on June 17, 1944, it accompanied aircraft carriers in Pacific offensives, serving as the flagship of the cruiser squadron and providing cover for the carriers. It participated both in the bombardments of the Japanese home islands and in post-Japan surrender operations as part of the 7th Fleet. Stricken from service in February 1947, it was scrapped in the late 1950s.
