Historical description:
The P-51D Mustang is the most famous American escort fighter of World War II. The D version, with its characteristic "bubble" canopy, provided better visibility and air superiority. Aircraft from the 15th Air Force (including the "Red Tails" – 332nd FG of the African American Tuskegee Airmen) were renowned for bomber escort and combat over northern Italy, Austria, and Germany. Mustangs played a key role in escort missions and earned a reputation for reliability.
